Apologist – Air Foundry

Frequency Domain – March 2021

Eight tracks of lush electronics from Apologist. Moving from dub techno openings with ‘Architects Dub’, into expansive ambient soundscapes with ‘No Closer Than The Moon’ and an upbeat sunrise chugger in ‘Landfall’.

Although a wide range of styles are covered here, the sounds are not disparate and hold together nicely as an album. Individual tracks hold up from a DJ perspective too, so should be something in here for everyone. TIP!

Bass Clef – Maze Greys

Four tracks of long form, linear compositions. There’s something quite modern and ‘techno’ about the sound design in these tracks, very up-front and clean, with the structure powering through from A to B. Quite refreshing for fairly long tracks to have the feeling of propulsion, without any tendency for meandering off the track.

Grab is now on the Frequency Domain bandcamp

Bit late to the party with this one, but it still deserves a mention, as there are still some vinyl left (!). Symptoms of Love bring the vintage sampling styles (ala Thomas Dolby’s Fairlight era) along with modern production sensibilities, in this lush 5-tracker on Sydney’s Planet Trip.
