MASC – Return of the MASC

Super Rhythm Trax – Release: 24th January 2020

Rave legend and Vicks brand ambassador Mark Archer, teams up with Shadow Child as MASC on Super Rhythm Trax.

Straight in on A1 with ‘Nine Oh’ and the worm is strong with this one. Echoes of Todd Sines in his .xtrak days and DBX carry through this tune. Nice to hear a relatively untapped era of minimal techno get revisited in a modern context. If anything, they could’ve got freakier with the synth, but as a fan of this style I’m not complaining. ‘Yih’ continues the flavour (flav) on A2, with a more jump-up approach. Fans of DJ Haus will approve.

The B-Side brings in Dance System on the remix of ‘Eye Feel’ (Super Rhythm Trax 024), whose come a long way since his apple bobbing days. Breakbeat aficionados will make short change with this one and the incessant cowbell won’t have you whistling this on your way to work, but it will surely get some chins wobbling.

Finally, ‘WKP’ sews up proceedings and sounds like Mr Archer has dusted off his Nexus 21 presets for this one. Nice rhodsey stabs, sounding not a million miles away from his ‘Self Hypnosis’ days. Lovely stuff.

Rave on!
