Excellent 3-part documentary on one of my favourite musicians of modern times, Laurie Speigel
A range of heavy dronescapes from Mosiac Tapes aka Simon Thomas, which traverse from fucking intense and dark, to submersed deep underwater, to noisy industrial wastelands. The sound, often reminiscent of distant machinery and ominous rumblings, hangs in the air like a spectral presence, filling the void with a disconcerting and mysterious energy.
Out on cassette and digital, this Friday 1st December via bandcamp
Interesting, washed-out radio fuzz trades places with intermittent synth, chimes and drum loops, giving a distinctly haunted vibe. Sometimes nudging towards BoC’s bleaker moments (ala Tommorow’s Harvest), The Xenakis Station keeps things tense, without going full darkside.
Not sure if there is any reference to composer Iannis Xenakis here, as the music is certainly not similar, other than in name.. Curious!
Either way, here is the accompanying release blurb:
The Xenakis Station. A long abandoned research station. A place always officially denied. The place now a fiction where shards of disputed truth remain.
The location, still not declassified. Remnants destroyed.
Last winter we got a phone call to say graffiti on an abandoned building on Redpoint Sound states” ‘Xenakis broadcasts were made here’ but official enquiries are still met with silence.

This was originally streamed as a live improv on Bandcamp Live. In hindsight, I think it’s an OK set, with range of moods and timbres. My fave sections are the looser unpredictable bits (mostly phonogene-related weirdness) and in the future will try to focus in more on these techniques. Maybe a bit overkill on the pentatonics, but there we go…
Things used:
- Make Noise Shared System (with older phonogene module)
- 2hp pluck
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- House plants
Soaring, psychotropic drones, which manage to tastefully meld spoken word, cello and synthesised tones into a deep meditative experience.
An entirely mesmerising release which ticks all the boxes (for me) when it comes to drones. Evolving textures and shifting synth tones combine with beautifully ghostly vocal elements, the resultant effect is somewhat intoxicating. Would love to hear this live.

Eerie electronica, characterised by distant synthetic messages and spindly environmental noise. The latest offering from A Year In The Country, continues with earthy drones and odd folklore in both it’s sound design and accompanying Novella.
Deep and heady drones from AHRKH. Two 30 minute pieces unfold at considered pace, resulting in distinct mind states from the experience.
