Modulations: Cinema For The Ear (1998)

Modulations is a feature-length documentary that captures a moment in history where humans and machines are fusing to create today’s most exciting sounds.

It traces the evolution of electronic music as one of the most profound artistic developments of the twentieth century. By cutting back and forth between avant-garde composers, Kraftwerk’s innovative synthesizer drones, Giorgio Moroder’s glacial Euro-disco, Afrika Bambaataa’s electro-funk, and Prodigy’s current worldwide superstarstardom, Modulations celebrates, replicates, and illuminates the nomadic drift of the post-human techno sound.

The film examines the kids who have turned the turntable into a musical instrument, disillusioned disco lovers who created acid house out of primitive synthesizers, Motor City mavericks who saw the drum machine as their escape route out of urban neglect, and a generation of British youth who transformed these blips and bleeps into dance floor anthems of their own alienation.

Modulations provides a sense of history and context in which today’s electronic music can be understood. It entertains the converted and remixes the mindset of electronica’s nay-sayers.

International Sangman – Death Roads & Spirit Ways 2

Ish Records – 28/1/23

Chasing after the herbs like Druids, a peppery Anansi with a pink balayage hurried by carrying a bunch of loose cables and heavy bulky bags. Mumbling something to herself, we believe she said: “Music is my name. I’m a dreamer.”, we followed her about but soon after lost her path. Walking our way back, a few of these cables were scattered amongst bushes and the mossy forest ground, we found a small cardboard box containing 5 cassettes. Most of them seemed to be unused, but one read “Death Roads” on one side, and “Spirit Ways” on the other.

A somewhat divine and powerful revision of the dub sound, stripped down, full of space, hiss and dynamic depth. A beautiful shimmering with analog wash and broken textures. Dirty and deep, breathing smoke like breathing life. Dubient.

Play it loud. On big speakers. Inhale. Enjoy.

Out now on LP (limited screen print options) and digi via Ish Records

Hoavi – Music For Six Rooms

Balmat – November 16th

Russian producer and Shells Rattle label owner, Hoavi brings 10 tracks of dubbed-out dreaminess to the Balearic-based Balmat label. Serious production values here, with filtered echos fluttering across lush, evolving synthscapes. Japanese minimalism meets Berlin-school dub techno.

The sharp attention to detail carries from the sound to the visual, with another gallery-worthy cover piece from José Quintanar.

Recommended.

Vinyl and digital at bandcamp.

International Sangman – Death Roads & Spirit Ways

Deep and heady dubbed out ambience from the Ish Records camp. Echoes of early Basic Channel swirl around more contemporary production techniques, with an emphasis on surface noise and dynamics.

A record that would serve equally well on a big soundsystem to warm up the dance, or to listen at home.

Head to Ish to cop the vinyl.

Altone – Modern Natura

Out of Japan, Altone, delivers his first release on the long-running dub-techno netlabel Insectorama. Sometimes, with free netlabels / pay as you feel Bandcamp releases, the absence of financial barriers to release means that quality control can suffer, but not in this case. Deep, spatial, aesthetics that sit well with the best of the genre.

Apologist – Air Foundry

Frequency Domain – March 2021

Eight tracks of lush electronics from Apologist. Moving from dub techno openings with ‘Architects Dub’, into expansive ambient soundscapes with ‘No Closer Than The Moon’ and an upbeat sunrise chugger in ‘Landfall’.

Although a wide range of styles are covered here, the sounds are not disparate and hold together nicely as an album. Individual tracks hold up from a DJ perspective too, so should be something in here for everyone. TIP!
